96. Returning Home

Cris is back in Eversong, but someone's absence has him doubting his life. While someone new has entered the picture, Cris knows he has to be a good boy.

Author's note: I apologize for not writing the past few weeks! For those who don't know, we're expecting and I've gotten really tired lately, so writing hasn't been something I've wanted to do. However, I will continue to give more Cris stories as we finish off the 3rd trimester and prepare my readers for my long break. Thank you for reading!!

Returning to Eversong was something he had wanted to do since his trip to Stormwind. The idea that someone was waiting for him pushed him to move forward even more, especially he had his fallout with a crewmember.
But when he returned, eager to see her, she wasn’t there. The estate was dark, cold, and empty of humanoid existence. So Cris left, wandering the forest alone, staying on his ship while Ziggly and Gerty went off on their own for a while. All the while, doubts and fears entered his mind.

What if she’s found someone else? What is she doesn’t want anything to do with me? What if I was just a game to her? What if she thinks I don’t want her?

The doubts lingered for a while until he saw the entry in his tome: Dinner this Sunday! Alaia was a woman he had met before and had reconnected with in the tome. After the initial dinner, breakfasts and lunches followed, and it wasn’t so much the idea of being with a woman that made him love her company, but the company itself. He wasn’t lonely. He wasn’t bored. She made him smile, and she smiled just as brightly. Perhaps it was a distraction, or perhaps it was the fact that gibberish was usually written in the tome that he didn’t see his wife’s message:  I’m back at the estate.
So Cris spent the entire week with Alaia, enjoying her company, but the more time he spent with her, the more he missed the physical company of a female companion, and he knew that was not going to go well if he continued with Alaia. However, he recalled the cold, empty feeling of walking into the darkened estate that evening when he had returned, and fear seemed to freeze his legs from proceeding back home to see if she had returned.
But he did. And all the doubts returned as well, clouding his mind as he walked through Eversong in a dreamlike haze. What would he do? Would he be angry? Would he be sorry? Nothing had happened between he and Alaia, except for a few embraces, but he was a flirt like that and he was known to take liberties and steal a few kisses from ladies here and there.
As he entered the estate, he noticed the soft flickering of a dying candle on a table. Tools, wires and gems were spread out along the table and he noticed a mop of black hair resting on an arm while her other hand held on to a bottle of alcohol. Niela was home. He didn’t know how long she had been home, but there she was.
Cris took a deep breath and gently reached out to touch her shoulder, silently hoping for the best.
