62. The Heart's Nightmare and Redemption

Cris' life has been more than tumultuous since his return to civilization. The loss of Rain and the emergence of a new lover has not only confused him, but slowed his search for his friends. However, Cris is getting some well deserved peace in his life, even if it's just for a little while. Author's note: I return to you with a dream sequence!

            “So this is it?”
            “I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s fine. Live and be happy. That will be my only pleasure in life.”
The woman with the strawberry blond hair touched his cheek once more before taking a step back. The sadness in her eyes made his heart ache, but he felt this was the right choice, for everyone. Cris had tried over and over to reclaim the one he loved, but each time was fruitless, ending up with a deeper shatter in his heart. The last time he tried, she told him she was with another. It was then that he realized that was not worth the effort if she had moved on so easily.
Cris watched her walking backward when she was suddenly covered in blood. “What’s wrong? Rain, what’s wrong?”
Her red-rimmed eyes narrowed as she smiled, extending her arms out to him, her bloody hands extending for his touch. “I killed him. I killed him because he ruined everything. I killed him for us.”
            “Killed…who?”
            “The one I loved. I killed…you.”
Cris looked down and saw blood falling from his neck, his shark’s tooth ripped from his neck an in her bloody hand. “What have you done!”
“I did it so that we could be together, Cristianno.”
“No! No, it’s over!” He reached over to here, teetering her at the edge of a cliff where a giant whirlpool swirled below her. “Please…no, Rain.”
“But you’re mine, Cristianno. You swore to me that you were mine and I swore to love you until death and beyond.”
“Rain, I love you, but you broke my heart so many times. I needed to move on. You are a strong, beautiful woman. There’s no reason why you can’t go on and live your life normally.
            “I can’t live without you.”
“Yes you can! Yes you can! Just, give me my tooth back, please.”
The woman shook her head. “I can’t do that, Cristianno. I love you too much.” Rain smiled softly and as she stepped back once more, she fell backwards gracefully. Cris tried to reach for her, screaming her name, but the rotating waters swallowed her, falling within, disappearing from sight.
On impulse, Cris was about to jump into the whirlpool when a hand grabbed his arm. “Not so fast, pirate.” The voice triggered something within him, as if stopping him from taking a step further. It was his voice of reason, the voice of the woman who had constantly been there for him.
“She took my life with her.”
“No, she only took her own.” The hand pulled him back and he turned around to see the familiar raven-haired woman dressed in her murderous red and black attire. She smirked at him and lifted a hand, holding the shark’s tooth between her thumb and index finger.
            “But…how?”
            “I said I would protect you, didn’t I?”
“Thank you.” He looked behind him at the whirlpool. “I killed her.”
“You did no such thing.” For a moment, her rather cold demeanor softened as she touched his face. “She chose that for herself. You chose to move on with your life.” She then kissed him softly causing Cris to lean toward her and into her arms. “Mine,” she whispered against his ear, causing him to smile. She placed the tooth back onto his neck.
“So just like that you change lovers? And you abandoned her for doing the same!” A voice rumbled around him and he held on to the dark-haired woman, who growled at the voice. She disappeared from his arms and Cris searched for whomever was speaking. “I will avenge her. Those who are guilty will suffer. You will suffer, Cristianno!”
A gun appeared in his hand with a soft whisper, “Do what you must, pirate.”
Cris looked down and lifted the weapon at nothing. “Whoever you are, you don’t know anything!”
“I know enough to destroy you.”
“In trouble again, eh Wolf?” Cris looked to his right side and saw a small goblin with a giant bazooka in his arms, ready to aim.
“Never thought I’d see you again, Zig.”
“It’s always girl trouble with you, isn’t it, Cris?” A slender blonde woman stepped to his left and placed a hand on his shoulder while she twirled a dagger in her other hand.
“Laerchel. I’m looking for you, bastards!” Cris muttered.
“Well keep looking, fucker. We’re alive,” the goblins said, laughing. However, a bolt of lightning landing before them shook Cris and he fell to the ground, glaring up at nothing but a lightning filled sky.
“Watch your back, Cristianno,” the skies rumbled, causing the ground to shake once more, which in turn made Cris unstable, causing him to fall.

His body shuddered for a moment as he opened his eyes. The waterfall’s sound reminded him of where he was. Taking a deep breath, he looked down at the woman holding on to his body tightly. Her dress was the only thing covering them and he leaned slightly to make sure she was more covered than he. Cris held her snug in his arm and she shuffled to get comfortable.
As he replayed the dream in his head, he couldn’t help but feel guilt, but as he looked at the dark-haired beauty, he smiled and kissed her head. She alone had picked up the pieces of his broken heart and led him out of the darkness he had been living in. He was more than grateful. He was falling for her.
“My beautiful flame,” he whispered. He couldn’t help but smile as he felt her grip on him tighten, as if she had heard him. Cris took a deep breath, unsure of what the future brought for him, but he chuckled. He was a pirate, after all. His only goal was to live in the present, and right now, the present was quite beautiful.
Cris smiled and closed his eyes, allowing himself a while longer in the arms of his new love.
