64. Into the Shimmering Deep

Now that Ziggly has been found, Cris moves on to the next thing on his list: a ship.

A cool breeze blew through the tiny boat the elf and goblins travelled on along the southern sea, avoiding the Horde and Alliance battles, and the conniving pirates that surrounded the sea. Ziggly watched Amy bounce as she whistled and navigated her boat. He rolled his eyes and shook his head, turning to Cristianno, who simply sat by the edge, smoking a cigarette and staring at the waters behind them. Sighing loud enough for both of them to hear him, Ziggly paced the few feet of space around him. However, no one seemed to pay any heed to his desperation. Once more, Ziggly sighed, stomping his feet on the deck.
“Yeaaah, I wouldn’t do that,” Amy said in her cheerful tone. Her eyes were still hidden behind her bright red goggles.
            “Yeah? Why not?”
            “Might spring a leak.”
“Oh, wonderful. Hey, Wolf, why did you choose to bring this genius with us?” Ziggly turned to Cris, who didn’t seem to pay any attention. “What the fuck is wrong with him?”
“Probably misses his wife. They were kinda cute together.”
Ziggly grimaced. “Eh? His what?” Shaking his head, he walked toward Cris and slapped his back. “Snap out of it!”
“Smack me again, and I’ll kick your ass.” Cris finished his cigarette and flicked the butt into the water.
“Well get your mind off your wench and let’s figure out what the fuck we’re gonna do. We’re getting close.” The elf stood, careful not to hit his head on the aluminum canopy over him. He followed Ziggly a few steps to the side of the boat and looked at the mountain ranges. “In a few, you’ll see the giant-ass crack that turned Shimmering Flats into a swimming pool. That’s where the South Sea dogs entered and their ships aren’t to far from the exit.”
Cris listened and nodded. “Alright, so we need a decoy while someone helps me prep the ship.”
“I’m thinking chirpy back there. You and I can get things together quicker. Besides, I’m sure it’s all a matter of clearing the ship, raising the anchor and getting the hell out of there before the other dogs realize what the fuck is going on.”
            “Canons?”
            “Yeah, I’m sure.”
Cris lifted his foot up on the edge and patted his boot. “Alright, I have a gun, a new sword, and my dagger. Any other weapons, I’ll grab from the dogs.”
            “Fucker, I’m loaded. Bring them.”
“And what about you, Amy?” Cris turned behind him and looked at the goblin. She turned to look at him and tilted her head.
            “What about me, Captain?”
            “Weapons?”
Amy lifted her goggles and showed them a wrench as smiled nervously. “Heh…”
“Bloody great.” Cris sighed and turned back to the mountain range.
“Well, look at this way, Wolf, she can stay with them as payment for taking the ship.” Ziggly started laughing, patting Cris’ back hard.
“Well, I also have Ankles.” As soon as Amy had mentioned the name, a silver fox walked around the corner. “He’s good at biting…well,”
“Ankles?” Cris lifted an eyebrow, knowing what she was going to say next. He simply shook his head, “Nevermind. Just… don’t get yourself killed out there. You’re the distraction.”
“Twenty gold says she doesn’t come back with us.” Ziggly looked back at Amy and gave her a mocking pouty lip before he started laughing.
“Alright enough. Amy, get us to the ship closest to the exit. Make sure this tub isn’t blocking it. You and Zig are going up the ship first. You’re the distraction, so distract them. Zig, give me the sign and I’ll board.
“Uh, Captain, what do you expect me to do?” Amy placed her hands in her pockets and rocked on her heels for a moment.
“Whatever you need to while we clear the crew below deck. Don’t get yourself killed and we’ll come rescue you.” Cris noticed they were getting closer. “Zig, don’t worry about the bodies. We’ll dump them later. As soon as the ship is clear, bring our bags on board and we’ll start setting sail.”
            “Alright.”
Amy placed her goggles back on and petted Ankles, who sat beside her. Meanwhile, Cris simply stared at nothing for a brief moment, which caused Ziggly to approach him. He lowered his voice and simply asked, “Why does bug eyes back there think you’re married?”
Cris blinked and glanced at the goblin for a brief moment before saying, “Get ready, it’s almost time.” He moved away and adjusted his weapons once more. “Where are the grappling hooks, Amy?” Ziggly lifted an eyebrow at his friend’s behavior, but grumbled and followed him to where the female goblin had directed Cris.
As the boat entered Shimmering Deep, Cris pointed out a ship to Amy, who then navigated the boat toward it. “They’re going to fucking see us,” grumbled Ziggly.
“No, look.” Cris pointed to several pirates onboard the ship who were either drinking or throwing up along the side of the ship. “They’re so bored, they’re drunk.” Amy stopped the boat right alongside the ship. “Amy, go. I’ll carry Ankles,” Cris whispered. Ziggly tossed the grappling hook and Amy quickly climbed onto the top. She looked over the edge and realized that for the most part, Cris was right. Half of them were passed out and only two noticed the hook.
“Cake,” Amy whispered. She jumped up onboard and waved to the two sober pirates. “Hello there!”
            “Who the hell are you?”
“No, no, the question here is, who are you? Do you know who you are? Is this were you want to be? On a ship filled with drunken sailors, babysitting?” The pirates, a male and female human glanced at each other before looking down at the goblin. “Didn’t think so. I’m here to offer you the deal of a LIFETIME!”
Ziggly smirked as she got their attention and he climbed on board. He looked down and noticed that Cris was ready to climb up with the silver fox mounted around his shoulders. He climbed up quietly and as soon as he could, he gestured the fox to jump up on deck, causing a soft thud.
The pirates lifted their heads and Amy quickly jumped on their feet, causing them to scream. They looked down at her, glaring furiously. “See? That anger you’re feeling is what you feel without the proper benefits, but I know that with a little respect, you’re willing to do anything right? Am I right? Or am I right?” The humans nodded a little, giving her their attention once again.
Ziggly and Cris exhaled and gestured toward the doorway to go below deck. “I’m sure someone heard that by now,” Cris whispered. He drew his sword and dagger, cautiously looking around corners. Ziggly followed close by, and they noticed that most of the crew below deck was asleep. While Cris hesitated his next move, Ziggly was already slicing throats, with nothing but gurgles as their only sounds. Cris took a deep breath and realized he had to. Before walking to the next sleeping pirate, he stepped close to the ones dying, capturing their souls in his shark tooth.
“Alright Cris, you need to do this…” he muttered to himself. He walked toward the captain’s cabin and found the captain of the ship behind a desk, asleep. Slowly, he lifted his sword and as he was about to swing onto the human’s neck, he heard the cocking of a pistol.
“Whoever you are, you better get the fuck away from me before I blow your fucking head off.”
Cris smirked, slowly retreating back. “A smart pirate. That’s a first,” he said. The man lifted his head and pointed the pistol at Cris.
“A stupid pirate. Not surprised there. What the fuck do you want?”
            “Simple. Your ship.”
A loud laugh echoed in the cabin. “And what on this gods-forsaken world makes you think I’m simply going to give it to you?”
Cris smiled and sat down on a sofa the captain had in his cabin. He crossed his leg across his lap and placed his hand on his boot. “I didn’t mean for you to give it to me. I was simply going to take it.”
The captain’s smirk slowly disappeared, “Drop your fucking sword.” Cris did as he was told as the man walked toward him. “I’m going to blow your fucking brains out.”
“Oh, is that so? Well, then, we should see who has the faster shot. See, right now, you can either blow my brains out, or I can make a hole right through your body.” His gun was now drawn and just as he said that, he pulled back on the hammer. “Either way, we will probably both die.”
It only took a brief second for the captain to look down at the gun when Ziggly jumped and threw his dagger at the man’s back. He arched his back, screaming in pain, making enough room for Cris to slither out of his grasp.
“Get to Amy! Now!” Cris ordered.
“Fuckers!” The captain screamed and fired a shot, causing Cris to fall over.
“Cris!” Ziggly jumped over his friend, grabbed his gun and fired a shot right between the human’s eyes. “And stay dead, fucker!” He turned and saw Cris on the ground, his white shirt getting soaked with blood from his left side. “Dammit, Cris, talk to me!”
            “I’m okay…it’s just a flesh—ow. Get to Amy.”
“I ain’t leaving you to die!”
“The faster we get rid….fuck…of the crew, the sooner we can….sail away and get help. Now go!” Ziggly hesitated for a second before growling and running out of the cabin, toward the deck.
Up on the deck, the gunshots were now more than obvious. Amy sighed and looked up at the humans. “Oh well, fuck it.” She pulled back her shirt and with a wide smile, she grabbed two daggers and lunged at the humans, the blades piercing their stomachs. She then twisted her wrists and pulled to the side, creating fatal wounds.
The humans collapsed onto the deck just as Ziggly ran up. Glaring at her, he asked, “I thought you only had a wrench.”
“Oops.” Amy shrugged and looked at the entryway. “Where’s the Captain?”
“Finish off the rest! I need to get this ship going. Once you’re done with them, go back to your fucking boat and get all of our belongings. Then go down to the cabin and make sure Wolf isn’t dead!”
“What!”
“GO!”
Amy ran across the deck, slitting the throats of every passed out sailor she found. Ankles followed after her, sniffling through their pockets, as if looking for any belongings they may no longer need. Dropping her daggers, she ran to the hook and slid down the rope, grabbing three bags, a bow, and a toolbox. As a final precaution, she pulled out a pistol from inside her shirt and began to shoot holes on the boat. As it sank, she grabbed onto the rope and began to climb, but other pirates had noticed the noise by now and were starting to make their way to the ship.
“Good one, wench. Now we have pirates on our asses!”
“I got this covered.” She dropped their belongings onto the deck and started shooting at the pirates getting closer. “I’m gonna go look at the Captain then I can use the canons down there.”
“I’m almost ready to get this thing going. You make sure Wolf is fine!” Ziggly continued to prepare the ship as Amy ran to the entryway. Before she did, she whistled for Ankles and pulled the grappling hook off the side of the ship.
“Ankles! Pull the rope all the way onto the ship! I’ll be back!” She ran down stairs and noticed the bodies around her as she made her way to the cabin. She found Cris on the floor, his shirt now red, as well as the floorboard. “Captain! What happened?”
“…Amy? Oh…good. You’re…you’re alive.” Cris tried to chuckle, but his body was trembling.
“Where did you get hit?” She ripped open his shirt and started to look for the wound. The bullet hole was right below his armpit and along the side of his body. “Damn, Captain, he had a shitty aim. He would have gotten you in the heart if he was any better.”
“He was…injured.”
Amy grabbed some bandages from her pocket and looked back at the human. “He looks dead now.” She applied pressure onto the wound. “We need to get you fixed up.”
“Tell…Ziggly to head…to head to Echo Isles. Tia’s…Tia’s sister is there.”
Amy nodded, applying more bandages. She got up and ran toward the cannons, firing a few shots. They were already moving and the shots served as warning signs. She ran up the steps and onto the deck.
“Ziggly!”
“Tell Cris we’re set!”
“He said to go to Echo Isles. Something about Tia’s sister?”
“Ah, yes! Good. Is he okay?”
“Losing a shitload of blood.”
Ziggly hit the wheel and shook his head. “Fucking Cris.” As he navigated the ship out of Shimmering Deep, he sent Amy back downstairs. As soon as the ship was on course, he ran down to see them.
Cris was now shivering more and turning pale. Ziggly grabbed blankets from the dead captain’s bed and covered him. “We’re on our way to the islands, Cris. We’ll find La’Toya and you’ll be fine.” Amy looked at Ziggly when he mentioned Cris’ name. He turned to her and growled, “It’s Wolf to you.”
“No, it’s Captain,” Amy looked down and tried to comfort Cris by patting his head. Ziggly didn’t oppose and he sighed.
“He’s always getting himself into trouble.”
“What about the bodies?”
“Well start disposing them in the water as soon as we’re clear of the fucking Alliance and Horde fleets.” He looked down and tried to smile as Cris moved a little. “Hey, fucker, you have a ship.”
Cris tried to chuckle but sought a breath instead. “Someone…someone has to tell… Someone has to tell Nie--” He exhaled and seemed to pass out. Both goblins immediately checked his breathing and heartbeat, which were still stable.
“We’ll check on him every few minutes. What was he talking about? Nee?”
“I dunno,” Amy said. “I know his wife’s name is Davina, but I don’t know who Nee is.”
Ziggly stared at her again, “What the fuck do you mean by wife?” But a response never came as they heard cannons being fired outside. They both ran back up the deck and noticed the Horde and Alliance fleets in their never-ending battle. With that as their cue, they both began to empty the victims’ pockets and tossing their bodies over into the ocean. Soon, they would approach Echo Isles on their new ship.
