36. Sound Advice

Several days have passed and Rain has not been found. The crew stop at Booty Bay to see if anyone's heard anything there.

The sun set, illuminating the ocean with orange and red hues. Cristianno hung his feet off the dock, simply staring. He had spent the entire day asking around Booty Bay to see if anyone had heard anything about Rain, but everyone simply shrugged and went about their way. He gazed at the sea, his eyes shifting as he continued to think of where she may be.
“Nope, not a word, Wolf. She’s gone.”
            “We’ll find her.”
Ziggly shrugged and sat beside the captain. “Look, Cris, I’m just going to be blunt here. We should go see Brisa and the girls.”
Cris slowly turned to see Ziggly. “What?” His eyes narrowed toward the goblin.
“She obviously wanted to leave. I don’t believe this ‘she had to go’ business. She could have come back and alerted you that someone wanted to take her away. Or hell, she could have mentioned it in her letter. I mean, it was a personal letter. It’s not like anyone was going to read it but you. She could have told you where she was going, but she didn’t. Because it was some secret lover. I betcha anything!”
“I’m going to fucking kill you if you don’t shut up.”
            “I ain’t joking, Cris!
            “Neither am I.”
“Come on, man. Let’s go take care of our thirst and have some fun. I promise you’ll be thinking better once everything’s cleared out.” The goblin smirked and rubbed his grubby green hands together.
“I don’t need some whore. I need my woman.”
“Well, obviously she doesn’t need you because she took off.”
For a moment, Cris was enraged at his words, but something made him stop. He thought of the way he behaved when she first disappeared, acting possessive of her, unwilling to share her with the world. “She didn’t, Zig,” he responded.
“Well then let me go get her for you…oh wait. She’s NOT HERE! She’s probably getting fucked by her secret lover and that’s why she obeyed and didn’t tell you where she was going.
Cris’ head ached, the tension rising from his body to create pulsating pain along his temples. He grabbed his chest, feeling an overwhelming sense of desperation. Thoughts of Rosaelynn rushed at him. Her promise of love, her dedication to him, and the commitment they had both made before she simply left for another. In his mind, all he could think about was Rain, in the arms of another man.
Ziggly laughed and shook his head. “You know, it’s always the quiet ones. They pretend to be so nice, then when you turn your back on them or when you give them an inch of freedom, they run off with the first fucker they see.” He stood up and patted his friend’s back. “I guess it’s for the best. At least you won’t lose your head to another girl. Well, if you want to sit here and mope like a pussy, go right ahead. You know where to find me.”
As the goblin walked away, Cris sat alone at the dock, thinking once more. Out of all the things that were so distorted and nonsensical about Rain’s disappearance, for a brief moment, Ziggly’s words were starting to make sense. He looked at his reflection in the water below and growled in a soft whisper.
            “Don’t betray me, Rain.”
