56. To Survive

Cris, Tia, and two crew members survived the Cataclysm, unbeknownst to them, but with humans hiding when the sun sets and the sudden disappearance of one of the crew members, things are looking rather...odd.

“So, he just ran off?”
The troll and elf nodded, staring at the fire silently as darkness shrouded them. The human looked back at the dark human camp, which was evacuated as soon as the sun set. With a sigh, the human known as Lenny turned back to the bonfire. “But, he wouldn’t do that.”
“He simply ran off earlier today when you were out fishing.” Cris gazed down at the odd book he had recently acquired. “I still don’t understand this book. Others are reading what I write?”
The human looked at the elf. “Captain, he just…he wouldn’t run off like that.”
“ ‘ee be gone nao, Lenny. It be jus’ us nao.” The troll leaned back against a solid piece of wood and closed her eyes.
“But…” Lenny sighed and hunched over as he bowed his head.
“Don’t worry about him, Lenny. He’ll probably come back and bring help or information about where we—Look! Someone else wrote something!” Cris moved strands of auburn hair away from his face as he looked down at the book.
Tia opened her eyes and glanced at Cris. “What joo ‘ave der?”
“Some book I found.”
“Do you not care, Captain? Two members of your crew survive and one of them runs off!”
Cris placed the book down and sighed, rubbing his eyes. “At this point, Lenny, everyone’s out to survive. He probably felt he was better off leaving. I will tell you this: if he ever wants back in with the crew, it ain’t gonna happen.” Lenny got up and sighed heavily, walking toward the sea. “Don’t wander too far or we won’t be able to find ya!” Cris followed him with his eyes for a moment before he sighed himself. “You think he suspects something?”
The troll smiled and closed her eyes. “Joo did wat ‘ad ta be done, Cristianno.”
“But…Penny was a good dwarf.”
“Three days at da most.”
Cris held his shark tooth. “And Lenny will be another three days?”
“Assumin’ we don’ get away from dis place.”
“So we need someone purer…”
“Der be childrun.”
“I will not kill children, Tia.” He shook his head and recalled what Ziggly had done for him, granting him close to a month of life before he had to kill again. “No children.”
Tia sat up and turned to glare at him, the fire casting frightening shadows on her face. Startled, Cris gave a small jolt. “Fine den. Der be a girl with da ‘umans. A teenagah in ‘uman terms. She be joor next best choice if we be leavin’ soon. Lenny can come wit us or stay wit dem. I dun care.”
“A girl?” Cris turned toward the abandoned human camp.
“Shood be easy, ya? Jus don sleep wit ‘er. Joo ruin ‘er.” She chuckled and patted Cris’ thigh. “Seduce ‘er an she be redy ta die.”
For a moment, Cris stared at Tia, recalling how similar she sounded like the human Anisse in Stormwind. Death was so easy to both of them. Anisse’s ways of convincing him had aroused his interest in killing, even driving him to the point of bloodlust, something he would never admit to her, but he always came back to his senses. Tia was the same. The way she held Penny in her arms, sweet-talking him as she held his bearded face to her breasts was cruel. The poor dwarf thought he was the luckiest creature on Azeroth. The amazing thing to Cris was that Tia’s smile never left her lips, even when she cradled his head and in a fluid motion, she twisted snapped his neck. The dwarf went limp almost instantly and Cris emerged from behind a hill to catch the floating soul. Both Tia and Anisse seemed to enjoy the kill. Cris couldn’t help but wonder if they were both right.
“Wat joo tinking, Cristianno?”
Cris looked at the book in his hands. “I’ll…I’ll talk to the girl tomorrow.”
“Good. Be a man.”
Lenny walked back to the camp and sat opposite of Cris and Tia. “I’ll see if I can find him tomorrow, Captain.”
“I was thinking you could go explore the area. Maybe you can find Penny out there too.”
The human nodded. “Yeah, I’ll do it.” He sighed and looked at Tia, who chuckled softly, and Cris, who went back to looking at the book that seemed to magically reveal messages to him.
